Free Will
05:13
|
|||
When did you first recognise
The death of truth and the birth oflies?
Hyperbole in the major key
Lack of self-determination
Might just bring me my salvation
Without free will then you can’t blame me
I look across and see my neighbour
I think his name is John
He’s bending down to pick crisp packets off his lawn
He’s claiming compensation for the poisoning of his koi carp pond
As far as I know, Frazzles have thus far failed to respond
And he’ll tell anyone who’ll listen
“The local parish church
Is now a tattoo parlour
What a backwards moral lurch”
Tattoos versus religion
A choice between the two?
One’s a permanent mark you’ll regret in later life
The other’s a tattoo
Struggling to reach my pinnacle
It’s hard these days to not be cynical
Confident can seem aloof
So I make my way, shuffling and shimmying
Down the street looking somewhat simian
Past the house with the old tin roof
If romance is dead then I saw its ghost
Leaning there on an old gatepost
Misty-eyed with a crooked grin
All I really want to do
Is get a little drunk with you
In a bath
In a Premier Inn
And like so many people
I’ve struggled with the weight
Of all the petty burdens
I couldn’t abdicate
And like so many people
I struggle with the blues
But maybe that’s just a consequence of the scattering of light which inevitably means we see certain photons as they radiate downwards
More clearly than other hues

Apogee
04:03
|
|||
Take care my love and I will see you
soon enough
Where salt sea streaks the window pane
You are the scarlet moon that rises over sea
You are the crystal in the rain
Your love will stretch me to my apogee
Your love will take me to the end
I am the way I am, I’ve always been this way
I have no choice in this my dear
You said I’m wrong, you said we always have a choice
You said it’s consequence I fear
Your love will stretch me to my apogee
Your love will take me to the end

Shrinking
03:31
|
|||
Did you think I wasn’t ready?
Did you think I had to grow?
I’ve been shrinking since before
The day I met you, don’t you know?
Oh I couldn’t seem to stop myself
From crying in the car
Could I fly right through the windscreen
To the sound of Mo Mhathair?
Don’t you wonder sometimes?
Oh this isn’t Colorado, Arizona, Idaho
And there’s nothing I could tell you
That you don’t already know
I didn’t read the novel
No, I barely read the blurb
There’s a tombstone in a churchyard
Simply marked “do not disturb”
Don’t you wonder sometimes?
Here lies the body of a man who went too young
He died looking for a melody that no-one’s ever sung
Did you think I wasn’t ready? Did you think I had to grow?
I’ve been shrinking since before the day I met you, don’t you know
