Amy & Ty
02:44
|
|||
It came with the wind
And left as soon again
Just another thing to get away
From a day I can’t win
I felt so down
I wrote to a friend
God only knows how long it has been
Since my hands held a pen
She wrote back and said
“I know Amy’s got a way with the horses
Don’t let that mean that you go lose your nerve
Remember when she found a crow
In a box took it home
How it only made it worse.
Let that be a lesson Ty there’s no need to rush
Sometimes a bird in the hand isn’t worth even one in the bush”

Bobbie
03:38
|
|||
Like a course of a river nobody knows
When you had scarlet fever burning down your throat
And they had to call a vet, no doctor was close
That’s when I decided I’d love you the most
And when they said, you made no bones
Did you put them in a cold frame watch them grow?
And in the winter did you hide them under snow?
Did you make it so no one but you would know
And the soft passing calls of two herring gulls?
When you saw a change in the stars was soon to come
To avert disaster did you run to the shore?
Did you bristle like chickweed as you threw him the rope?
Or laugh like the goose as it hit against the stone?
Staring out at the lighthouse
To decipher its code
Watch it answer in anger
Cut right through the cold
But I’ll never know
Would you want me to know?

Lamb's Tail
03:17
|
|||
Caught me wishing on a lamb’s tail
If it moves to the right, I won’t sleep tonight
If it moves to the left then I will rest
Saw the dead mouse by the barn side
Had a face like cinnamon, but inside rotten
From where the cat had gotten in the door left ajar
It all dies, that ain’t nothing new
Can we talk about pussy willow coming through
The cat who looks just like that kid you once knew
Can we talk about anything to lighten up the mood?
Dreamt I was heavy with a fox child
Had its head and legs tucked in, a floating velvet ring
Just an inch below my skin with eyes set wide
Let’s not leave it too much more time
I want my Dad to know our kid, see them laughing
On that island where he lives with tides wild

Sargasso Sea
02:47
|
|||
If like the Sargasso Sea
We had no land round our bodies
Instead a place defined
By a shared hope, one of a kind
What a thing to be
A source of food, a constant safety
Guilt’s such a heavy word
And yours weighs more than most
May it return to the sand
Spill like stars or stone from glass
What a thing to be
At twenty one or twenty three
It was you or him
A chance to live in constant safety

Humans' Worst Habits
03:40
|
|||
I was in the back feeling horrid
Someone offered me an orange drink
I turned away with such little grace
Nothing so sweet could stop me feeling so pale
Sick from a river we filled with
All of humans’ worst habits
I took a chance on a water’s breath
Waiting to see what it had taken and left
And in the hospital, while being ignored
I saw the shape of you rise through dry ice
You were avoiding the reeds you thought housed living things
Afraid of the liquid light
And the water iris
A spine curled up and rigid
Restricted by the fabric
I leaned in to hear the sound of your voice, you said
“How well we feel isn’t always a choice”
And you looked so human then
I guess you’re just one of us
Afraid of unheard things
And of humans’ worst habits

Winter's Song
03:54
|
|||
We’ve all got a bark worse than our bite
Halos and sun dogs, just tricks of the light
We’ve all got feathers soft and gentle
Just don’t wear them like we’re meant to
That’s why our bark’s worse than our bite
That time I saw the moon rise
And I swore it was a sun set
Caught out and a little tired
It’s when I’m at my best
So when the white tails turn back brown
Spring pushes onwards the ice it melts
Keep a little coldness in you
Just wear it soft and gentle
That’s when the dark no longer bites

Jesus
02:55
|
|||
Find me tired and sober
I’ll be peaceful and kind
Until we find out together
When’s too much of a good time
‘Cus I can see so many different colours
I’ll turn myself blind
Later on in the evening
I was unthinking to try
And sing ‘Hares on the Mountain’
Without saying goodnight
I can think of so many reasons
Won’t ask myself why
Should have been with you all dancing
On the night Anna died
Instead I was taking chances
Found peace in a bloodied Christ
Painted flowers by his side

Rabbit
02:53
|
|||
Never saw myself as cruel
I laughed for too long
I heard you leave the room
I guess that’s us done
Never one to start a fight
Now I’m thinking about how deep these teeth could bite
My neighbour’s vines are growing all the time
I said that I would water them last weekend
I stayed inside, hoped that they would die
I guess it’s me taking the easy way out
Does the rabbit know she’s food?
With wide eyes she runs
Cirrus hides a silver moon
Falls at the next turn
Always thought I was wide eyed
Now I never even find myself surprised
I called for help as his head hit the ground
I lay my shirt down
Couldn’t say my name when the ambulance came
Thinking how to get the blood out

Funny Love
03:31
|
|||
Born too late for the summer’s sun
Never saw the light as it’s thrown across
The hickory and the chestnut tree
Never talked about in so many words
But we are nothing without the herd
It’s a funny love, but it’s what we’ve got
Put my best foot forward to fall back down
On my own for several hours now
But I don’t mind calling this my time
If I can close my eyes to the setting sun
Know my herd are safely pushing on
It’s a funny love
It’s a funny love
But it’s what we’ve got

Natalie pt. 2
03:34
|
|||
We’re made of mistakes and diamond, ash, salt
We can all be great, but not all at once
Be brave and be shameless, just come back home
I can be patient, just not for long
Natalie’s been gone now for weeks
I’ve been trying to find myself some peace in the little things
You’ll spend a night with the moon I don’t know
She shines bright, scared I might lose faith in my own
Go be great I’ll keep safe all that we’ve grown
Just come back before the dark sets and your battery is low

Sisters
03:50
|
|||
In the colour of my sisters
In the colour of my sisters I can read
Slogans on white calico sheets
But my skin was neoprene, slag and concrete
I just couldn’t let them in
Though they’re all I believe
In the colour of my sisters
In the colour of my sisters I can read
Slogans on white calico sheets
Couldn’t bring myself to speak, my words too heavy
And my mouth it was a cliff
Of rock face and of scree
So find me by the hedgerow
And find me by the slime mould
Let me lie down with my eyes closed
Until my feelings all come back to me
‘Cus they’re still all I believe

Ty & Amy
02:15
|
|||
“Amy I don’t think that Ty is doing quite as well as he likes to make out. And I know he wouldn’t take it kind if he somehow knew I had called you up to talk this straight with you. It’s just I love you both so dearly, so it hurts to think he’s thinking of you badly. And Amy did you know he wrote a week back now or so when the geese were here and the southerly was strong. I kept to my words, don’t know if they're enough to keep him calm, to keep him from coming home. So don’t cut him off so severe like twice back one year when you killed the winter’s rose. Some things you must let grow and that means thorns and all.”
